Green firm aiming to generate £30m

A GREEN energy company founded just three years ago is targeting a quadrupling of turnover to £30 million as demand soars for domestic wind turbines. Icon Energy, based in Kinross, is building a network of agents across Scotland to deliver sales and maintenance. A push south of the Border and into Northern Ireland is also on the cards.

The firm, which supplies wind turbines, solar panelling and biomass generators to farms and small businesses, saw turnover rise by 79 per cent last year to about £7m. It forecasts hitting £30m within two years.

The company has focused on the agricultural market. Farmers have been able to use the turbines as a source of income by feeding excess power back into the national grid. Company co-founder Iain Sloan said: "We now have around 2,000 clients and are seeing a steady stream of farmers diversifying into wind technology as an additional revenue source. We have spent a lot of time perfecting our offering"

Alongside manufacturing partner, Proven Energy, the firm has developed a cluster of three small turbines, said to be seven times smaller than conventional wind-farm turbines, that offer an income of as much as £54,000 a year.

Sloan said his company had more than 200 wind turbine applications going through planning.

As it targets the general public and small businesses, the company's current headcount - 18 staff and 17 agents - is set to "increase sharply".
